Potting
Soil
Much of your success when potting houseplants
depends on your choice of a potting media. A key ingredient,
it promotes good watering control for your plants.
Select a true potting media and
not a compost based soil mixture. Composts are best used as
organic amendments for outdoor soils.
Here are several tips for creating a wonderful hanging basket
or container this summer. The first is to use an artificial
soil composed mostly of peat moss and/or perlite. Garden soil
compacts and hardens after regular watering. Root growth is
inhibited because they require porous spaces to expand. Hard,
compacted soils do not grow promote healthy root growth. You
should recycle potting soil from year to year.
It will
retain it’s natural porosity indefinitely.
A good potting soil should stay
porous and allow watering and fertilizing at an even and
consistent rate.
