What basic herbs and spices should I have?

I started cooking and I just wanted to know what kind of basic herbs and spices would I need to invest in?

Like wide spectrum herbs and spices, things that are used in everyday cooking.

Anything outside of herbs and spices are appreciated, too.

What kind of flowers should I buy these girls?

For Valentines Day, I’d like to buy some flowers for two girls I’m very close to (as friends). Each and every year they complain about how they never get flowers so I thought I’d do a nice thing and surprise them with flowers. What kind of flowers should I buy them and in what color? I’m aware each type of flower and it’s color have all these different meanings and I don’t want to send the wrong message, especially since I know that they know the meanings of flowers lol!

I have all of these wonderful recipes that call for fresh herbs…but i’d hate to buy spendy little bundles of them, only use a tiny bit, and then the rest go to waste. How long do fresh herbs last anyway? How can i keep them fresh for as long as possible?

I bought a soil with organic compost already in it. It says 6.4 ph and 15 percent per 100 grams is organic compost. I was planning on adding some of my own compost to the soil, but isn’t 15 % enough already??

Thanks

Some people say you have to let the air get in and others say you have to close it up in order for the heat to build up which hastens decomposition. Who is right?

How much should I water my flowers?

I know when it’s hotter out you need to water your plants and flowers more often, and I’ve heard that you shouldn’t water your flowers everyday, unless it’s hot out. But, my question is, how much water should I give my flowers. I have a variety of flowers in pots. I’ve heard you should water them until it starts to drip out from the bottom, is that true? Can you over water flowers?

I’ve bought for everyone but my grandfather. He’s 82 and loves gardening and water gardening. Usually, I get him a bird feeder (he loves bird watching) or something that has to do with hummingbirds. This year I’m at a loss. I’m a first year teacher on my own and on a very limited budget. Any ideas?
